SEO is a wide subject and while doing SEO we need to take care of a lot of things. On Page SEO is one of them.
On Page SEO are SEO techniques you use while writing your content or article. These techniques are also known as article SEO.
When you are making your article more SEO friendly, you are doing On Page SEO.
I think On page SEO is the most crucial SEO tactic that you can’t ignore. Sometimes, On-Page SEO techniques are all enough to rank your site #1 on google. That means you cannot afford to do technical SEO, off-site SEO, and other advanced SEO stuff before making sure you get an A grade in On-page SEO.
In this post, we are gonna look at each and every on-page SEO techniques every blogger should be using to rank #1 on Google SERP.
Here I present the on-page SEO checklist.
Keyword Optimization- Heart of On Page SEO
Keyword research and optimization is of the most important On page SEO techniques. We will look at it in detail here.
What are keywords?
A keyword is a word or set of words or phrases which can tell what is your article all about. They are basically phrases that can represent the topic of your article. For example, this article is all about SEO tactics to use while writing articles thus on-page SEO, article SEO, keyword optimization etc can be the keyword here.
Search engines like Google use focus keywords to find out what a web page is all about and then place them accordingly in search engine results.
So if you want Google to rank your site for certain keywords you need to target these keywords as your focus keywords.
1. Choose 1-2 focus Keywords to Target in your article
This is the very first of all On page SEO techniques to use. You need to target some keywords in your post for which you want to show up high in search results.
For example, I want Google to show my this article first on google search results for keywords like on-page SEO techniques and article SEO. So I would be choosing these two keywords as my focus keywords and will be targeting these keywords throughout the post.
I will be telling you how to target keywords soon but before that, you need to know how to find focus keywords?
You need to target those keywords as your focus keywords in your post which get searched in Google and other search engines considerably.
For example, my this particular post can be represented by focus keywords like- Article SEO and On-page SEO techniques, How to write SEO friendly articles, Article SEO guide, What is on-page SEO and much more. These all are keywords that can represent my article content.
But I would target only one or two as my focus keyword which is less competitive and has a high search volume.
And to find out those ideal focus keywords, we need to do keyword research. Right.
Why and how to do keyword research?
To answer you “Why to do keyword research?”.
Here is my own case study.
I recently wrote an article about “digital skills you can learn and make money or get a job”. The post was basically about digital skills that are trending and investing your time and money in these can be a good deal.
I wrote an amazing article over that after doing a lot of research and hard work. I was sure that this post is gonna rank 1 on google soon. But wait, I forgot to do keyword research and targeted any keyword in my post without looking at its search volume and competition.
I targeted a keyword “digital skills to learn and make money”. Guess what, I ranked on Google for that keyword after 4 days. But I end up getting no traffic from that keyword. So all my hard work went all in vain.
If I would have done keyword research, I would know that this keyword is not getting any traffic so its worthless to target is as my focus keyword. In addition, In addition, Keyword research would have made me realize that I should target keyword “digital skills” with 4400 monthly searches instead of “digital skills to learn and make money” with 0 searches per month.
I think now you know why keyword research is important. An absence of keyword research can make all your hard work going all in vain.
Now we move on to “how to do keyword research?”.
Your ideal focus keyword should have low competition and high search volume.
While there are many keyword research tool available on the market, most of them are paid tool and free tools are taking a lot of hard work.

One of the popular free keyword research tools is KWfinder. It’s easy to use and efficient but there is one limitation, you can only do 5 searches that mean you can only research five times per day.
You need to just go on their website kwfinder.com, enter a keyword and they will give you all information about your keyword and related keywords that can be more profitable to target.
There are other tools you can use for keyword research like keywordtool.io and Google Keyword Planner.
Using these tools, you can choose keywords which have low competition and high search volume to target in your post as focus keywords. Once you are clear about which keywords you are gonna target. It’s time to know how to target these chosen focus keywords.
TIP: Target long tail keywords for fast SEO results
For fast On Page SEO results, you need to target Long Tail Keywords. Long tail keywords are long search queries which are more profitable to target. Because these keywords have low competition and you have the benefit of targeting several small keywords together while targeting a long keyword.
For example, It would be more beneficial for me to target “what are on-page SEO techniques” than “on page SEO”
as the long tail keyword would have low difficulty and I can target many keywords like “What is on-page SEO”, “on-page SEO”, “on-page SEO techniques” while targeting a main long tail keyword.
2. Include your focus keywords in Article Heading
Once you are clear with your focus keywords, you need to include your focus keywords in your article heading.
This is one of the On Page SEO techniques that you should never ignore.
For example, I have done keyword research and I know that the keywords like On-page SEO Techniques and article SEO are best to use as focus keywords. But I am not including them in my heading then there is no mean of doing keyword research. I should be including them in my post title carefully and wisely for best SEO results.
Like my heading should be:
On-Page SEO Techniques | Article SEO Techniques
It’s not the same as I am not targeting article SEO techniques in this post.
2. Include focus keywords in meta title and description
This is vital, as meta title and description give search engines an insight in your web page content.
If you are including focus keywords in meta title and description, you are giving search engines a hint that my page is all around these focus keywords and you should be placing my page high for these keyword results.
TIP: Include focus keyword first in front of your meta title.
3. Include focus keyword in URL of your post
That’s also important. You need to have an SEO friendly URL for your article.
As search engines don’t like long ugly urls without any focus keyword.
But you need to change it to make it SEO friendly.
You can do that by changing your permalink structure. Just go into your WordPress dashboard, click the setting tab from the sidebar, click permalinks from the menu, change the permalink structure from default to post name.
Once you have changed permalink structure, make sure you include focus keyword in your post URL.
TIP: keep your URL short and SEO friendly.
4. Use your focus keyword in H2 and H3 headings
You need to include your focus keyword in your H2 headings and also H3 heading.
Including your focus keywords in H2 and H3 tags at least make Search engines realize that your post is really about these keywords. And you are not trying to fool search engines with fake meta description or other things.
5. Use your focus keyword throughout your post
When you include focus keywords throughout your post naturally, you make sure that search engines get to know your focus keywords when they scan your content.
It’s important to use the focus keyword throughout your post for On Page SEO.
Don’t do keyword stuffing
Keyword stuffing is the practice of inserting focus keywords throughout the content shabbily many times in order to fool Google. But that’s not gonna work in 2018.
Sorry to say but keyword optimization getting less and less important. But at this stage, it’s crucial.
You focus keyword should contain 2-6 % of your total post words. Not more than that.
Don’t try out keyword stuffing, this can get you banned from Google.
6. Include focus keywords in image alt tags
Search engines can’t understand images and thus they cannot make out what an image is all about? But search engines interrupts images using their alt tags.
Thus, it becomes necessary for us to use focus keywords in our image alt tags.
In WordPress, you can edit any image after upload and from there you can write alt tags for images. Take a look at the picture below.

If you are a WordPress user. Then congratulation, with the Yoast SEO plugin you can monitor and improve your on-page SEO.
This free plugin is all easy to set up and you can SEO your article more efficiently with this. This plugin will suggest you with all on page SEO techniques I listed above and make sure you don’t forget any of them.
Other On Page SEO techniques to Use
7. Write Long In-depth Content
Content that ranks in google top ten is on an average 1500 words long. So you need to follow the trend. Try to make each and every of your article at least 1000 words long.
That’s gonna happen only if you would write in-depth content. Otherwise, you will end up writing like anything bullshit content.
Long In-depth content will be treated as awesome and thus would get more social shares and will attract backlinks.
8. Write awesome CTR optimized Meta titles and Headings
Meta title is what appears as your article topic or page title in your search engine results page.
If your article is CTR(click through rate) optimized that means more people are gonna click through it. That would give search engines a hint that this is what users demands, we should place it higher in SERP.
CTR optimized headings are gonna help you a lot to climb up to the first position once you hit the first page of SERP.

You can CTR optimize your meta titles by using words like:
BEST, TOP, PROVEN, TRENDING, PRACTICAL, COMPARED, REVIEWED, REVIEW, etc.
9. Include headings and sub-headings in your article
Google, nowadays is emphasizing more and more on user experience. No doubt, Google monitors it and use it as a ranking signal.
If you present your content in the form of Headings and Sub-headings, your content would become easily understandable and user-friendly and thus SEO friendly.
10. Include a table of contents for very long post
That’s another way you can make your content more user-friendly. This is one of the on page SEO techniques you should be using while writing long in-depth articles.
If your articles are really long, users visiting your site are gonna find themselves stuck if they would like to jump to any random topic. They would need to scroll down and down to get their desired section.
This would make your content less user-friendly in turn. Thus its a good practice of using a table of contents for longer posts.
11. Link Internally wherever possible
Internal linking is a crucial on-site SEO strategy. This is an on-site SEO strategy, I suppose. But I am listing it here on On-page SEO techniques because you are gonna use it while writing articles.
Linking internally divides your authority throughout your site. Right. And this is helpful in increasing page authority.
If you want any of your content to perform well in SERP. You need to link that content in all of your blog posts.
There are many ways you can include internal links on an article. But the best ways are to link from suitable anchor texts. This would not make your user feel like fooled when they will click a link hoping to see content related to anchor text. And you can also link out to other posts in your article using Related. See below.

12. Link out to Others
Linking out to other useful resources can make your content more awesome, informative and of course user-friendly.
When you link out to others, you pass some of your authority to them through link juice. But that’s gonna reduce your authority or anything like that.
In fact, I found content that links out to external resources performs better in SERP as they are informative and user-friendly.
I would not say this is a very-must use tactic but I will say, you need to follow the trend.
13. Make your content more shareable
The content that is most shared performs well in SERP. There is no-doubt Google consider social score while deciding your rankings.
The content which is shared more is one which is awesome. We have talked about this you need to create long awesome content. If you wanna get more social shares.
In order to make your content more shareable, you can include social sharing buttons on your post. And click to tweet feature, Like button etc.

14. Infographics Hack
Infographics are graphic images containing information. These type of images present data in an attractive form. Almost everyone in the content marketing industry today is using infographics.
Infographics not only help your post get more shares but a cool awesome infographic can get you a lot of backlinks and thus give you a breakthrough.
On page SEO techniques are something you should never ignore.
Keyword optimization has been a crucial factor in deciding your SERP rankings for years.
But now, you should start focusing on the intent of a keyword and then make content out of it. Rather than just making a content optimized for that keyword.
You should consider following on page SEO techniques I wrote down under the “other on-page SEO techniques” Heading seriously.
On-site SEO is secondary that comes after on-page SEO. Then after these two comes off-site SEO. You should be dealing with these in this sequence. Rather trying to randomly optimize your site for search engines.
On page SEO techniques if applied correctly are guaranteed to give results.
I have used on page SEO techniques neatly and was able to rank out high domain authority competitors with myself having low domain authority.
keyword research is still vital and you should never forget it.
